Curious about pottery and ready to get your hands in clay? This 6-week beginner wheel throwing class with Thomas at The Pottery Den is the perfect introduction to ceramics for first-time students and anyone looking to build a strong foundation on the wheel.
Throughout the course, students will learn essential wheel throwing techniques including posture, studio safety, centering, pulling walls, and creating foundational forms like cylinders and bowls. Students will also be introduced to trimming, glazing, and finishing techniques that transform handmade pieces into functional ceramics ready for everyday use. With plenty of guided instruction and practice time, this class is designed to help students feel comfortable, creative, and confident in the studio.
Thomas brings an energetic and community-focused approach to teaching. Originally from Bainbridge Island, Washington, he moved to Bozeman in 2023 to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts with a focus in ceramics at Montana State University. Since discovering clay during the Covid pandemic, ceramics has become both a creative practice and a way to connect with others. In addition to teaching at The Pottery Den, Thomas serves as president of the MSU Ceramics Guild and as an ambassador for the MSU College of Arts and Architecture.
Whether you’re looking to try something new, build a creative habit, or connect with the local arts community, this class offers a welcoming space to learn and grow through clay.
